Allergan Biocell Device Withdrawal

On July 24, 2019, Allergan issued a voluntary withdrawal of its Biocell textured breast implants and tissue expanders. Concerned patients seeking additional information are encouraged to contact their board-certified plastic surgeon – find a board-certified plastic surgeon in your area using our Find a Surgeon referral service.

  • It's important to note that the only implants affected are Allergan's Biocell textured implants and tissue expanders.
  • Due to the low risk of developing BIA-ALCL, the FDA does NOT recommend having your implants removed unless you are experiencing symptoms, which include pain, lumps, swelling, fluid collections or unexpected changes in breast shape, including asymmetry. If this is the case, contact a board-certified plastic surgeon. You can find an ASPS member using our Plastic Surgeon Match referral service.
  • ASPS staff are not clinicians and do not provide medical advice. The Society recommends consulting a board-certified plastic surgeon for any concerns related to BIA-ALCL or breast implants. A listing of board-certified plastic surgeons in your area can be accessed using our Plastic Surgeon Match referral service.
  • More information about BIA-ALCL is available at PlasticSurgery.org/ALCL. This includes links to FDA resources that provide recommendations for patients with Biocell textured implants, as well as recommendations for health care providers and anyone with implants in general.
